Why Magnus Group is all about the team

22nd February, 2021

If you have been following Magnus Group and Olly Magnus on social media, you will know how important the team is. It is very rare for an update not to mention teamwork: it is at the very heart of Magnus Group’s culture and everything they do.

Olly Magnus has been CEO since 2019 and is championing the importance of teamwork and having the best people in the business with him. But the culture of teamwork has been part of Magnus Group since its creation nearly 50 years ago.

We are family

Magnus Group has always been a family business. By family, we don’t just mean having Magnus as a surname. There have been uncles and nephews, sisters, fathers and sons as part of the Magnus team. The family culture which has been in place for over 50 years, and is now being nurtured and developed, is strong.

It gives Magnus great employee engagement.  The workforce is committed, go the extra mile and take it personally. They put in the extra time and effort needed when situations arise and want the company to succeed.

The team are well established. Once people are in Magnus they stay in! Promotion from within is not unusual and with the work-hard-play-hard approach, the staff turnover is low.

The team support each other. They are willing to be flexible and have each other’s backs. In covid, Magnus Group drivers helped out in the warehouse as everyone pulled together.

They provide great customer service – as they treat it like it is their own business.

They work hard, often against tight deadlines. The team is motivated to work together to achieve the best.

Together We Achieve More

The importance of the team is clear. On entry into the building, there is a sign declaring Together Everyone Achieves More.  New recruits are photographed holding their Magnus fleece mimicking a sports team “sign up”.  The ethos of a sports team is a good comparison to how everyone works together.

The recruitment strategy over the past 18 months has introduced a clear management structure within the divisions – Warehousing, Freight Forwarding, and Transport. This has provided the support and communication links the wider team has needed and strengthened the work processes.

Olly, as CEO, is adamant that the company will only be successful if the right team is in place. He is described as accessible, will find time to talk to anyone, and is quick to praise.  Whilst he has introduced a more formal management structure, the culture remains one of open communication: everyone’s voice is heard. The team of 130 are all part of the Magnus Group family.

A growing team for a growing company

The past year has been tough on everyone. Haulage, logistics and warehousing are industries that have worked throughout the pandemic. With the majority of roles requiring onsite working, the culture of family and teamwork has been vital keeping morale high during this challenging time.

Over the past eighteen months, Magnus Group has welcomed sixteen new members to the team. Watch out for our “Meet the Team” series to find out more about not only these new members but some of our longstanding team members.

“I am so proud of the whole team. Not only for how they have managed the past eleven months in a global pandemic, but how they work every day,” says Olly Magnus. “I strongly believe a company is only as good as the team in it. With a team like #TeamMagnus we will go far.”

Magnus Group is based just outside Ipswich, Suffolk, ideally placed to serve the Port of Felixstowe with direct road links to the Midlands, the North and London.
