After Paul Magnus passed away in 2018, his son Olly wanted to create a Memorial Day that would reflect his Dad’s personality. Olly knew that day needed to include sport, beer, friends, and fun.
The inaugural Paul Magnus memorial golf day took place at Hintlesham Golf Club in September 2018, with 21 teams. 84 friends and colleagues from throughout the country got together to remember Paul, and have a great day: just as he would have wanted. It was a clear success with memories shared of Paul, and new memories made. The “Paul Magnus” truck was there to give a nod to Paul’s forty years in the road haulage and logistics business.
No memorial would be complete for Paul without acknowledging his Australian heritage. From the logo to team names (most of which can not be repeated here!) to Bush Tucker trials, the Kangaroo is leading the way.
By 2019 Olly had bought shares in Magnus Group and had started to build on his Dad’s legacy. The day was equally successful, firmly establishing it as an annual event.
We’re just going to gloss over 2020 (did someone say worldwide pandemic?) but needless to say the PM Golf Memorial Day came back in full force in 2021. Despite the weather (the rain did hold off – just), and fuel shortage, 21 teams had a cracking day. Kevin Carpenter entertained with golf tricks, the beer flowed and some even continued at the pub: a day that Paul certainly would have enjoyed.
It remains a family affair. Beer is provided by The Greyhound, owned by Dan Lightfoot and his wife, Paul’s daughter, Emma. Emma Magnus, Olly’s wife, is there to ensure the day runs smoothly. The wider Magnus Group family is now actively involved with COO Mark Oakley’s wife Lynsey was there to greet all the players.
“It’s brilliant that everyone can come today to not only remember my Dad but also to have a great social day. People from the haulage industry throughout the country come to join in” explains Olly. “There is a real mix of family friends, my Dad’s old work connections, many of which are now my work connections, and people from the forwarding, warehousing and haulage sector.”
This year the winner was Shyam Patel. His elation is captured perfectly in this photo!
Plans are already underway for the Paul Magnus Memorial Golf Day in 2022 on 29 September. Get it in your diary and contact Olly to book your place.
