Meet Sophie from Magnus Group: Pall-Ex Driver of the Month

15th February, 2021

When a young woman is looking for a new career that gives her the work-life balance that she craves, becoming an HGV driver is probably not at the top of the list.

Magnus Group is proud to employ Sophie Parry-Warnes as one of their qualified HGV Class 2 drivers. Sophie has been with Magnus Group for nearly two years.

Sophie started her working life in retail. She loved the variety of each day, meeting different people and being involved in customer service. What she didn’t love were the unsociable hours.  “I was missing out on so many events and opportunities with friends and family that I really had no work/life balance whatsoever”, explains Sophie. “I started looking at other industries to see what was available and what work/life balance they could provide”.

Life as an HGV Driver

Being an HGV driver isn’t necessarily a career which many would associate with improved work-life balance. But for Sophie has provided exactly that and is ideal for her. Having regular working hours gives her the work-life balance that she craved.

“Some days I will start by making collections, taking these back to the depot in Ipswich, then I will head out and make deliveries. Other days start with deliveries. It really does vary each day” says Sophie. “I often work in new areas too, depending on the route I am assigned to. Seeing different parts of our area is yet another benefit to being a driver!”

With only 1% of lorry drivers in the UK being female Sophie is leading the way, hoping that other women will follow her example.

Pall-Ex Driver of the Month

Sophie, Magnus Group

Sophie was featured as Pall-Ex Driver of the Month a few months ago.  Pall-Ex is a pallet shipping network delivering pallets across the UK, Europe and worldwide. Magnus Group is proud to be a member of Pall-Ex and won the Regional award for the South-East in 2019. Magnus Group has been a member of Pall-Ex since 2015. Pall-Ex strives for the same vision of excellence and high level of customer service as Magnus Group does, which makes an ideal working relationship.  To have a driver, such as Sophie, recognised in their series of “Driver of the Month” was a great achievement.

“We are very proud of Sophie,” says Olly Magnus, CEO of Magnus Group, “Certainly in logistics and haulage in Suffolk, Sophie is quite unusual in her career choice. I hope she will inspire other women to come and join the industry”.
