Paul Magnus started a shipping agency in Felixstowe in 1973. The business went on to become Magnus Group. After Paul’s death in 2018, his son Olly sold up his own business to buy shares in Magnus Group and bring the business back under family ownership.

Olly took over as CEO in 2019 and set about building up the business, expanding the services on offer and doubling the size of its warehouse operation to 225,000 square feet, with 20,000 racked spaces. A rebranding exercise now presents a fresh and modern face to customers old and new.

Magnus Group offers a complete range of freight logistics and forwarding services. The business in Great Blakenham, Ipswich, is ideally placed to serve the Port of Felixstowe and enjoys direct road links to the Midlands, the North and London.

Olly grew up in and around Magnus Group, learning not just the ins and outs of freight forwarding and logistics, but also the importance of customer care and innovation.

He worked initially in warehouse operations to fund a trip to Australia and then in 1992 he joined Contship Containerlines, the well-known global shipping line. He learnt about import and export services, building up more valuable experience, before joining Magnus Group head office in 1998.

Keen to launch his own business operation, Olly set up Burhill Logistics in 2003, building it into a £15 million turnover freight forwarding company employing more than 30 people.

Following the death of his father, Paul, Olly sold up his share of Burhill Logistics to fund a share purchase in Magnus Group, bringing the business back under family control.

Kevin Parker, Managing Director

Originally from Newcastle, I spent 20 years in the Royal Air Force in logistics, leaving in 1996 to join Magnus Group. Initially, I ran the warehouse before becoming a Director and shareholder in 2002. We increased our warehousing and moved to our current site, where I developed the customer base for the warehouse, then initiated the joining of our pallet network to diversify the business further.

In 2012, I took on the role of Managing Director and now work closely with Olly Magnus, the CEO, to further develop the business and oversee its current expansion.

John Stringer, Director

Having grown up in the transport environment, it was inevitable that this sector would play a major part in my career.

The growth at the Port of Felixstowe in the early 1970s provided many opportunities, and I enjoyed more than 20 years of involvement in haulage to and from Felixstowe.

In 1992, I was recruited by Harwich Transport Ltd, part of the DFDS group. I went on to become a Director of the company, responsible for all UK transport operations.

In 2004, I joined Magnus Group and became a shareholder and Director two years later.
